What is cheerleading?
Cheerleading is recognised to be one of the fastest growing sports in Australia. What is the appeal? Well, we think cheerleading has the winning formula when it comes to inclusive, team-based, and adrenaline-pumping sports. It encompasses a healthy dose of:
• Strength, fitness, endurance, and flexibility
• Performance elements, including visually-appealing routines choreographed meticulously to heart-stopping modern music
• Highly technical individual elements, such as jumps and tumbling
• Highly technical team-based elements, such as high-flying stunts and jaw-dropping pyramids
• And perhaps our favourite: cheerleading uniquely marries together athleticism with a dash of glitz and glamour. In no other sport will you see athletes pull off such impressive and physically-demanding skills, all whilst decked out in rhinestones, sparkle, and bows!
Cheerleading fosters strong teamwork, lifelong friendships, confidence, resilience, perseverance, fun, and fitness. Indeed most of the staff here at Skybound have been lifelong friends, who first met through their involvement with cheerleading!
Cheerleading teams are divided by age- and skill-level, with age divisions catering for toddlers through to adults; novice through to elite; and girls and boys alike. There is certainly no “one-size-fits-all” mentality in cheerleading, and it is recognised to be one of the most inclusive sports on offer.
Each team will learn one routine which combines stunting elements (lifting, twisting, tossing, and throwing a “flyer” through the air), pyramid elements (a connection of stunts to create large “pictures” or shapes), jumps, tumbling (gymnastic elements, such as cartwheels, rolls, handsprings, and tucks), and dance. All of this is pieced carefully together to a track of fast-paced music and rehearsed throughout the year.
Most teams in Australia will attend multiple local or National competitions in a year to perform their routines, where they can: enjoy showing off their skills to friends, family, and the wider cheer community; have the opportunity to meet other cheerleaders from around their state or country; and receive feedback from a panel of judges to help them improve their skills and routine for future performances.
